Training Camp for New Dads a big hit!!
On a warm and windy Saturday in September, the Sioux Valley Clinic on S. Minnesota Avenue was the site of the first ever "Training Camp for New Dads" in Sioux Falls. Fifteen new or expectant dads took a crash course in "being there" for their newborn babies. The Training Camp was a joint venture of the Sioux Falls Fatherhood Initiative and Sioux Valley Hospital's Birth Place and Women's Resource Center.
The idea behind the Training Camp is to give expectant dads a chance to get together with other men to learn, discuss and share thoughts and feelings about the upcoming 'blessed event" from their perspective. Information about what to expect from their new baby was shared by video, discussion, and featured "demo dads". The "demo dads" were two local dads who came into the class with their babies (a 2 month old and a 3 month old) and talked with the group about their experiences as highly involved dads. These dads shared the challenges and blessings they've had through their hands-on experiences with diapering, bathing, feeding and calming their newborns. Another highlight (along with lunch!) was a session with local family practitioner, Dr. Brad Hruby. Dr Hruby addressed a variety of issues with the men from his perspective both as a doctor as well as the father of two small children.
The event co-planners, Bill Webb and Jan Mueller, were pleased and excited with the whole event. The number of participants exceeded all expectations and the feedback from participants indicates that they felt it was enjoyable and worthwhile. Another Training Camp for New Dads is planned for this coming December 10.
