Scarecrows do more than frighten away birds and decorate yards and porches. They provide a great way to get the family together for a day of fun and creativity. When making a scarecrow, a little of this and a little of that go a long way to help you personalize your scarecrow and make it something special.
You can dress your scarecrow just about anyway you want; don't limit your choices to the standard flannel shirt and jeans. Add patches to give your scarecrow an overall country look or a beret for a French look. Let your imagination run wild.
For the scarecrow's head you can use a pumpkin, a garbage bag, a piece of fabric or a piece of panty hose. To make the face, you can use a permanent marker or you can use buttons for the eyes and felt for the other features. You can even sew on a face you have made.
After you have constructed your scarecrow's face, you need to stuff the body with dry hay or straw. Do not use wet straw or hay-they can mold when wet. After you have stuffed the head and clothing, put the scarecrow together.
To stand the scarecrow up, hammer two pieces of wood into a cross shape and attach your scarecrow to it. Or pull up a lawn chair, and let your scarecrow sit its tired body down after a day of standing in the field.
If you prefer, you can make a simple ghost scarecrow. Use a white sheet or large piece of white fabric. Either stuff the head of the ghost or use a basketball for the head. Tie off the head so the rest flows like a ghost. Then draw the face on with a permanent marker. Hang your ghost in the yard.
Use bales of hay, cornstalks, pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns for added decorations around your scarecrow. Make up small ghosts to hang around the scarecrow and hang from trees around your house.
