Old Man Winter Is Coming!
The weather is cooling down, and old man winter is on his way. Don't get caught in the cold this year. Prepare your home for the frigid times ahead and keep your family warm and safe.
Blustery winds, mounds of snow and ice, and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on a home. Protect your home and your family by following these tips:
o Clear snow and ice from walkways and driveways to prevent falls.
o Remove dead branches from trees to prevent damage from falling limbs.
o Have your fireplace and furnace cleaned and inspected by a professional before winter to prevent fires.
o Vacuum your heating ducts regularly to prevent fires and improve furnace efficiency.
o Put up storm doors and windows and replace worn weather stripping to prevent cold air from leaking into your home.
o Insulate pipes to prevent water from freezing and making them burst.
o Move furniture away from heating vents to prevent fires.
o Clean out gutters and repair damaged shingles to prevent leaks and additional damage.
Following these tips will help keep your home and your family safe during the winter. Unfortunately, it won't stop the snow, sleet and ice from occurring. Be prepared in the event that a winter storm hits and you and your family are snowed in. Keep these emergency supplies on hand:
o Bottled water, one gallon per person per day
o Nonperishable food
o Hand can opener
o Candles and matches or a lighter
o Flashlights and extra batteries
o Battery-powered radio and extra batteries
o Extra blankets and sleeping bags
o Alternative heating source, such as a wood-burning stove or fireplace
It's better to be safe than sorry. Start preparing for the cold weather now. Insulate your home well and follow the tips above. When the first winter blast hits, you'll be ready, and should a bad storm strike, you'll have the supplies on hand to get you through until help arrives and the roads are cleared.
